Trend Micro™ OS Protection (Beta) Quick Start Guide

        


To begin using Trend Micro OS Protection, click the corresponding button in the Download page or the TrendSecure launch pad in Trend Micro Internet Security (PC-cillin™). After you click the button, the product will download and install. Installing Trend Micro OS Protection

The installation involves several stages:

  1. Select the features you want to install
    • Firewall Booster – a background enhancement that allows the Trend Micro Internet Security firewall to take advantage of the capabilities of the Windows Vista™ firewall
    • Pre-Startup Scan – scans your computer before Windows starts, allowing you to find threats that have the ability to evade security software in Windows
  2. Allow Windows Security to install the driver software

    During the installation, Windows Security may prompt you for confirmation several times. Select Install this driver software anyway to continue.

  3. Insert the Windows Vista DVD

    Pre-Startup Scan performs a scan before Windows Vista starts. The installer may need to copy files that are needed to enter the pre-startup environment from your Windows Vista DVD. Insert the DVD when prompted and then specify the drive letter of your DVD drive.

Performing a Pre-Startup Scan

Performing a pre-startup scan involves several steps:

  1. Open the program

    Double-click the Pre-Startup Scan desktop shortcut or click Trend Micro OS Protection > Pre-Startup Scan in the Start menu.

  2. Initiate the scan

    Click Perform Pre-Startup Scan in the product screen. Pre-Startup Scan lets you select whether to run a quick scan that checks only system files or a full scan of all your files. After you click Next, Pre-Startup Scan starts creating a restore point to back up your system in case you encounter problems during the scan.

  3. Restart your computer

    After Pre-Startup Scan completes the backup, you can select whether Pre-Startup Scan immediately restarts your computer or waits until your next restart to perform the scan.

  4. Perform the scan

    After you restart, Pre-Startup Scan automatically loads the pre-startup environment and performs the scan. By default, Pre-Startup Scan will warn you of any detected threats when you start Windows.

Recovering from Errors

If you are unable to start Windows successfully after the scan, press the F8 key before Windows attempts to launch. Enter the Recovery Environment and then restore your computer using the “BeforePre-StartupScan” restore point.

Using the Enhanced Firewall

The Trend Micro Internet Security firewall interface does not change after you install Firewall Booster, which provides background enhancements by taking advantage of the capabilities of the Windows Vista firewall. You can continue using your enhanced firewall as you would without Firewall Booster.
