Trend Micro™ OS Protection (Beta) FAQ

What is Trend Micro OS Protection?
Trend Micro OS Protection consists of two components that supplement the protection offered by Trend Micro Internet Security (PC-cillin™).

  • The Firewall Booster enhances the Windows Vista™ firewall and lets Trend Micro Internet Security take advantage its capabilities.
  • The Pre-Startup Scan finds security threats before Windows™ starts, removing them before they have the chance to hide from Windows-based security software.
What are the installation requirements for Trend Micro OS Protection?
You must install Trend Micro Internet Security (PC-cillin™) on Windows Vista before installing Trend Micro OS Protection.
Is Trend Micro OS Protection compatible with all versions of Windows Vista?
You can only install Trend Micro OS Protection on computers running 32-bit versions of Windows Vista.
My computer does not use the English language version of Windows Vista. Can I still install Trend Micro OS Protection?
Yes, you can install and use Trend Micro OS Protection on 32-bit versions of Windows Vista™ in any language.
Do I need to install the Trend Micro Internet Security (PC-cillin™) Personal Firewall before using the Firewall Booster?
Yes. The Firewall Booster enhances the Trend Micro Internet Security Personal Firewall, allowing it to take advantage of Windows Vista™ firewall capabilities.
Do I need my Windows Vista™ DVD when installing Trend Micro OS Protection?
The Trend Micro OS Protection installation program may need certain files on your Windows Vista™ DVD to launch the pre-startup environment. Insert the DVD if prompted, and then specify the DVD drive letter.

If Windows Vista™ came pre-installed on one of the following computers, you may be able to install Trend Micro OS Protection without the Windows Vista™ DVD:

  • Lenovo™ ThinkPad™ X60
  • Toshiba™ Portege™ M500
Can I add the Pre-Startup Scan to my Sidebar?
Yes. Simply right-click your Sidebar and click Add Gadgets. In the list of gadgets, double-click Pre-Startup Scan.
Do I need to enable the Windows Vista firewall to use the Firewall Booster?
No. The Firewall Booster enhances the Trend Micro Internet Security (PC-cillin™) Personal Firewall, not the Windows Vista™ firewall. When using the Trend Micro Internet Security Personal Firewall, you should disable other firewalls, including the Windows Vista™ firewall.
Why does my firewall still look the same after installing the Firewall Booster?
The Firewall Booster provides enhancements without changing the interface.
Installing Trend Micro OS Protection blocked some of my connections. What should I do?
Immediately after installation, the Firewall Booster may block certain connections, including Remote Desktop connections. Restarting Terminal Services or your computer should solve the problem.
Does the Pre-Startup Scan offer different scanning options?
Yes, the Pre-Startup Scan provides two different scans:

  • The Quick Scan checks only essential system files, and normally finishes in just a few minutes.
  • The Full Scan checks all files on all of your hard disks, and usually takes much longer.
What makes a Pre-Startup Scan different from a regular scan in Windows?
Most security threats run in Windows, and some can manipulate their own code or Microsoft Windows itself to avoid detection. By checking your computer before the security threats can launch, a pre-startup scan can find and stop these threats before they have a chance to hide.
Can I schedule pre-startup scans?
The Pre-Startup Scan can remind you if too much time has elapsed since your last scan. To configure these reminders, click Configure on the main screen of the Pre-Startup Scan. Specify how often you want to receive a reminder beside the Remind me to perform a scan every option.
Do I need to restart my computer to run a pre-startup scan?
Yes. The Pre-Startup Scan checks your computer before Windows starts to find threats before they can hide from Windows-based security software.
After switching to another operating system, I cannot launch the Pre-Startup Scan. What should I do?
The Pre-Startup Scan may stop working if you make changes to your computer's startup information. If you install another operating system or reinstall Windows, make sure to reinstall the Pre-Startup Scan as well.
Can I undo changes made during the pre-startup scan?
Yes, you can undo changes made to your system settings by pressing the F8 key before Windows starts to launch. Go into the Recovery Environment and restore your computer using the "BeforePre-StartupScan" restore point.

Enter the Recovery Environment.

Select the restore point.

What can I do if Windows does not start after the pre-startup scan has finished?
If you cannot successfully start Windows after the scan, press the F8 key before Windows starts to launch. Go into the Recovery Environment and restore your computer using the "BeforePre-StartupScan" restore point.
After running Pre-Startup Scan, my restore points seem to have disappeared. Where did they go?
This known issue can occur if you have an older version of Windows, such as Windows XP, running alongside Windows Vista (a "dual-boot environment"). Starting your computer with the older operating system deletes all the Windows Vista restore points.

How do I uninstall Trend Micro OS Protection?

To remove Trend Micro OS Protection, click Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features, and then uninstall the Firewall Booster and the Pre-Startup Scan separately. To avoid leaving behind file remnants and other removal issues, uninstall the Firewall Booster before removing Trend Micro Internet Security (PC-cillin™).

To uninstall Trend Micro OS Protection with the removal tool, log into your computer with Administrator privileges, click this link, and then double-click the file you receive. After the removal tool automatically removes all of the Trend Micro OS Protection files, you will need to restart your computer.

Why does the User Account Control claim that OS Protection comes from an unknown publisher?
