Transaction Protector FAQ

Version 1.1

How does Transaction Protector safeguard online transactions?

Transaction Protector helps protect your online transactions with the following features:

  • Keystroke Encryption—hides what you type from keyloggers.
  • Wi-Fi Advisor—checks the safety of wireless networks.
  • Site Inspector—determines if the current page you have open might pose a risk.
How do I know when I have connected to a safe wireless network?

The security rating of the wireless network presently in use determines the color of the Transaction Protector toolbar. Transaction Protector can also list the wireless networks currently available along with their safety ratings, so that you can make sure to use only safe networks.

What do the toolbar colors mean?

The toolbar color indicates the safety of your current wireless network:

Green means that you have established a safe connection.

Yellow means that Transaction Protector could not determine the safety of your connection to an open network.

Grey means you do not have a network connection.

Red means that your network connection poses a security risk.
How does Transaction Protector identify safe wireless networks?

When you click Find Wireless Networks on the toolbar, Transaction Protector lists the wireless networks currently available. An icon shows the safety rating for each one:

Icon Status Description
Safe This network requires authentication or encryption, or it has a secure portal for logging in.
Uncertain Exercise caution when connecting to networks with this rating.
Dangerous The portal used for logging into this network has an untrusted certificate. It might function as a phishing site that mimics a legitimate site to capture user credentials or other sensitive information.
Checking Transaction Protector has not finished evaluating the safety of this wireless network.

Note: If you cancel or skip the safety check, some networks will show as "unchecked".

Why should I encrypt my keystrokes?

A certain kind of spyware called a "keylogger"; can record exactly what you type when using the Internet. Keyloggers can transmit sensitive information (such as your real name, account passwords, home address, mother's maiden name, or credit card numbers) to criminals seeking to commit fraud or steal your identity. Keystroke encryption helps prevent keyloggers from keeping track of what you type.

Does keystroke encryption protect everything I type?

The keystroke encryption feature of Transaction Protector protects what you type on website pages.

Can Keystroke Encryption work with my keyboard layout?

Keystroke Encryption does not provide full support for the following keyboard layouts:

  • Chinese (simplified)
  • Chinese (traditional)

If using these keyboard layouts, Keystroke Encryption typically can only protect passwords.

Note: If you have trouble typing Chinese characters with Keystroke Encryption enabled, trying changing your keyboard layout through the Regional and Language Options of the Windows Control Panel.

Why can't I use Keystroke Encryption?

You must log into Windows XP with Administrator credentials to enable Keystroke Encryption. Once enabled by someone with Administrator privileges, Keystroke Encryption becomes available to anyone using the computer.

You can also run Internet Explorer as an Administrator and then enable Keystroke Encryption. Consult Windows Help for more information about switching user sessions and running programs as a different user.

Will the toolbar work with my Web browser?

Please refer to the overview for information about supported browsers.

Can I use Transaction Protector with Remote Desktop and VMware™?

Keystroke Encryption does not work with Remote Desktop and VMware, and cannot protect what you type while using them. Keystroke Encryption also may not work with similar virtualization or remote access applications.

Does Transaction Protector work with multiple wireless network cards?

No, Transaction Protector can only work with one wireless network card. It typically works with the card that Windows enabled first. To make it work with a particular card, first disable all of your wireless network cards, and then enable only the preferred card.

Will my wireless network management software affect Transaction Protector?

Some wireless network management software, including programs that came with your wireless card, can affect Transaction Protector under these conditions:

  • The wireless network management software conflicts with the required Wireless LAN API update for Windows XP. In the event of a conflict, you may need to remove the other software before installing the update and using Transaction Protector.
  • The wireless network management software disables the wireless networking software that comes with Windows.

To use Transaction Protector, make sure that the Wireless Zero Configuration service (in Windows XP) or the WLAN AutoConfig service (in Windows Vista) has started. Also, always let Windows manage your network connections. Please refer to Windows Help for guidance.

Why does Transaction Protector suddenly stop finding and checking wireless networks?

Disabling your computer's wireless network card automatically disables Transaction Protector as well. If your wireless network management software automatically shuts down the wireless card after connecting to a network cable, then Transaction Protector will also shut down at that time.

I get an error message about installing a Windows update every time I view or find wireless networks. What should I do?

Transaction Protector needs a Windows XP update to check for available wireless networks. If you don't have this update, Transaction Protector displays an error message and encourages you to download and install the update.

You can get this update by visiting to the Wireless LAN API (KB918997) page on the Microsoft website. You may need to install the following updates first:

Note: Service Pack 3 (SP3) for Microsoft Windows XP Service already includes the Wireless LAN API update. If you have already installed SP3, then you should not receive this error message.

Does the Wireless LAN API update for Windows XP work for my language?

Transaction Protector can automatically install the Wireless LAN API update on computers running any of these Windows XP versions:

  • Chinese - Hong Kong SAR (ZH-SAR)
  • Chinese - China (ZH-CN)
  • Chinese - Taiwan (ZH-TW)
  • Danish (DA)

How are Transaction Protector ratings different from TrendProtect ratings?

Unlike the detailed ratings provided by TrendProtect, Transaction Protector ratings fall into just two categories:

  •   Red means the website poses a security risk.
  •   Green means the website does not pose a security risk.

Click Check Web Site Safety to get safety ratings from Transaction Protector. TrendProtect automatically rates the current page and provides ratings for Internet search results.

Please feel free to install TrendProtect along with Transaction Protector for additional protection.
