Trend Micro Toolbar Quick Start Guide

Version 1.2

The Trend Micro Toolbar included with Trend Micro Internet Security Pro can help protect you by checking the safety of your wireless network connection and websites you would like to visit.

To prevent information theft, the toolbar can also encrypt sensitive information, like passwords and credit card numbers, typed into websites.

It can even find security threats in files received through email or instant messaging, or start a scan for viruses and other malicious software.

Installing Trend Micro Toolbar

Trend Micro Toolbar comes with Trend Micro Internet Security Pro. If you have removed it or you wish to upgrade to the latest version, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Pro Features button to open the Pro Features Navigator.

  2. Click Manage Features and select the Available tab.

  3. If the Trend Micro Toolbar appears on the list, you can install it. If it does not appear on the list, then you already have the latest version.

Accessing the Trend Micro Tool Bar

After installing the toolbar, it should appear automatically in your web browser.

Understanding the Wi-Fi Advisor

When you connect to a wireless network, the Wi-Fi Advisor icon changes color to indicate the safety of the network.

Icon Status Description
Safe Trend Micro considers the connection safe and secure.
Uncertain You have connected to an open network that might pose a risk.
Dangerous You have connected to a network that threatens your security. It does not use a trusted certificate, and might allow the theft of your personal information.
No Network Found You do not have a network connection.

Understanding Page Ratings

The Trend Micro Toolbar can check for security risks in each website you try to open. The Page Rating icon changes color to indicate risk. The list below shows all the ratings that might appear:

Icon Status Description
Safe Trend Micro considers this page safe. It does not pose a risk to your security.
Suspicious Trend Micro has found that this page could pose a security risk. Avoid the site if possible, or exercise caution if you do open it.
Dangerous Trend Micro has identified this page as dangerous. It may contain hidden malicious software, or shows signs of involvement in "phishing," a kind of fraud in which fake websites mimic legitimate ones to steal information.
Trusted You have decided to trust this page, but Trend Micro has not confirmed this rating.
Untested Trend Micro has not yet tested this page. It may use an unsupported protocol (something other than HTTP or HTTPS).
No Connection Unable to contact the page rating system. Check your Internet connection and proxy server settings.

Besides rating the page you have open, the Trend Micro Toolbar can also rate the links listed in Google, MSN, and Yahoo! search results. A rating icon will appear before each link. Moving your mouse cursor over the rating displays more information about it.

Please note that using a search engine assistant will prevent this feature from working properly.

Understanding IM Ratings

The Trend Micro Toolbar includes a plug-in that can identify links to risky websites received through these instant messaging services:

  • America Online® Instant Messenger (AIM® version 6.8)
  • Skype™ Chat (versions 3.6 and 3.8)
  • Yahoo!® Instant Messenger (versions 8.0 and 9.0)
  • Windows Live™ Messenger (versions 8.1 and 8.5)

You can activate protection for Yahoo! Instant Messenger or Skype just like any other plug-in offered by those services. Follow the directions below to set up protection for America Online Instant Messenger or Windows Live Messenger.

How to Protect Windows Live Messenger (Versions 8.1 and 8.5)

  1. Click the Trend Micro button on the toolbar, and then select Settings...
  2. In the window that opens, select IM Rating from the list.
  3. Click the button to install the appropriate plug-in.
  4. Use Windows Live Messenger to start a conversation with someone.
  5. At the top of the conversation window, click Actions, and then select Start Trend Micro IM Rating. A rating panel will open next to your conversation.

How to Protect America Online Instant Messenger (AIM 6.8)

  1. Click the Trend Micro button on the toolbar, and then select Settings...
  2. In the window that opens, select IM Rating from the list.
  3. Click the button to install the appropriate plug-in.

American Online activates the Trend Micro IM Rating by default, but you can confirm that the plug-in protects you by opening the AIM window showing all your contacts, clicking the Manage button (at the bottom of the window) and making sure that a mark appears in the checkbox beside Trend Micro IM Rating.

Ratings Table

Once enabled, the IM Rating plug-in will warn you about links to risky websites by displaying one of the following messages in your chat window:

Warning Message Description
[Dangerous Link] The linked page may contain hidden malicious software, or shows signs of involvement in "phishing," a kind of fraud in which fake websites mimic legitimate ones to steal information. IM Rating will prevent you from opening these links.
[Suspicious Link] Avoid the site if possible, or exercise caution if you do open the linked page.
[Disconnected] Check your Internet connection and proxy server settings.
[Untested Link] The linked page may use an unsupported protocol (something other than HTTP or HTTPS).
Warning Icons: AOL:    Skype:    Windows Live:    Yahoo:

When enabled, the IM Rating plug-in also maintains a running list of links checked in the chat window. A color-coded icon will appear beside each one.

Understanding Webmail Ratings

The Trend Micro Toolbar can identify links to risky websites within messages sent to these web-based email accounts:

  • Gmail
  • Windows Live™ Hotmail®
  • Windows Live™ Mail
  • Yahoo!® Mail

A color-coded Page Rating icon indicates if the link would open a website posing a risk. The list below shows all the ratings that could appear:

Icon Status Description
Suspicious Trend Micro has found that this page could pose a security risk. Avoid the site if possible, or exercise caution if you do open it.
Dangerous Trend Micro has identified this page as dangerous. It may contain hidden malicious software, or shows signs of involvement in "phishing," a kind of fraud in which fake websites mimic legitimate ones to steal information.
Untested Trend Micro has not yet tested this page. It may use an unsupported protocol (something other than HTTP or HTTPS).
No Connection Unable to contact the page rating system. Check your Internet connection and proxy server settings.

Moving your mouse cursor over an icon displays more information about the rating.

Enabling Keystroke Encryption

By encrypting the information you type, the Trend Micro Toolbar can prevent keyloggers (a type of spyware that monitors your keystrokes) from obtaining passwords, credit card numbers, and anything else that you type into websites.

To switch on this feature, click the triangle beside the icon and select Enable from the list that appears. When enabled, a Keystroke Encryption icon will appear in the system tray:

The Keystroke Encryption toolbar icon changes to show whether you have enabled or disabled it.

Changing Toolbar Settings

To adjust the Trend Micro Toolbar settings, click the triangle next to the Trend Micro button on the toolbar and select Settings... from the list.

The Settings window lists all of the Trend Micro Toolbar features. Mark the checkbox next to any listed feature to enable it. Highlighting an item on the list will display a short introduction to that feature, plus a button that you can click to change the settings.

Changing Page Rating Settings

To adjust the Page Rating feature, you must first open the Settings window as explained above. Highlight "Page Rating" on the list in the Settings window, and then click the Change Settings button.

In the Page Rating Settings window, you can also decide if links in search results should get color-coded highlighting, and whether or not you must click the rating icon to get more information about the rating.

You can also specify if the Trend Micro Toolbar should warn you about websites with a poor reputation, and set the strength of your protection against web threats.
